Vietnam's tourism history was officially marked on July 9, 1960, when Prime Minister Pham Van Dong signed Decree 26/CP establishing the Vietnam Tourism Company under the Ministry of Foreign Trade. Since then, the tourism industry has gained significant advancements, gradually attracted investment attention, and developed into a spearhead economic sector.

For Phu Yen tourism, from 1961-1989, the tourism service of this period was mainly accommodation and small refreshments. The establishment of Phu Yen Tourism Company, which operated in the form of accommodation and dining at Huong Sen Hotel and Intershop Hotel, marked a turning point in the formation of Phu Yen Tourism.
In April 1995, the Provincial Party Standing Committee (tenure XI) issued Resolution 15-NQ/TU on the construction and development of the tourism industry until 2000, identifying "Tourism is an important economic sector; tourism development is a shifting direction in the socio-eco development strategy, contributing to the implementation of provincial industrialization and modernization". The PPC approved the Phu Yen Tourism Development Master Plan for the period 1996–2010 and decided to establish the Provincial Tourism Development Steering Committee.
In 2001, the 13th Provincial Party Committee held a review and evaluation of the implementation of Resolution 15 and issued Resolution 03-NQ/TU on the development of the tourism sector until 2005 and orientation 2010. In 2015, the Provincial Party Committee issued an action program on tourism development to make it an important economic sector of the province in the period 2015–2020.
Phu Yen has always recognized tourism as a key industry that needs to be developed in order to take the lead since it is a region with numerous opportunities and advantages for its development. In 2021, the Provincial Party Committee issued Action Program 09 on investment in tourism development in the period 2021–2025, striving to make tourism a key provincial economic sector by 2030.
Through its history of formation and development, Phu Yen Tourism has achieved positive results in many aspects. Planning work is focused. Up to now, the province has made a master plan for the development of Xuan Dai Bay National Tourist Area to 2030, approved by the Prime Minister. Planning for tourist growth in the province of Phu Yen through the year 2020 with a vision to 2025; adjusting construction planning to serve as a basis for calling for investment in tourism service development.
In order to invest in infrastructure for socio-eco development associated with the development of tourism, the province mobilizes a lot of funds. The road to Phu Yen has been convenient and comfortable, with roads, railways, waterways, air, and sea.
Technical infrastructure and tourism services are expanding in scale, and quality is constantly improving. Some major projects have come into operation, such as Rosa Alba Resort, Stelia Beach Resort, Sao Viet, Sao Mai, Apec, Saigon-Phu Yen Hotel, Hung Vuong, Trade Union, Sala Grand, Pytopia Convention Center, etc.
Up to now, the province has 400 tourist accommodation business establishments, including 2 five-star hotels, 2 four-star hotels, 4 three-star hotels, 4 two-star hotels, 38 one-star hotels, 82 hotels, 89 motels, and 26 homestays that meet the conditions of the tourist accommodation business.
Investment and embellishment of monuments and landscapes are focused. The province recognizes nine tourist attractions and three local tourist routes. Phu Yen tourism also received many honorable titles and awards recognized and awarded by prestigious domestic and foreign organizations.
In the current difficult context, the total number of tourists to Phu Yen in the first 6 months reached 1,521,000, reaching 63.3% of the year plan, of which international visitors reached 9,110, 3.8 times higher than the same period last year.
With its achievements and contributions to socio-eco development, Phu Yen Tourism is honored to be awarded the second-class Labour Order. Many collectives and individuals have been awarded medals and certificates of merit for tourism development.
