(TITC) - On 26th September 2023, in Hoi An (Quang Nam Province), Workshop "Responsible tourism associated with nature and wildlife conservation" was organised by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinating with Quang Nam Forest Protection Department, International Organization for Conservation of Nature (WWF).

The event is within the framework of the biodiversity conservation component of the project on Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Vietnam (VFBC) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the aim of enhancing awareness and understanding for travel agencies about responsible tourism towards the natural environment; at the same time, promote participation and interdisciplinary cooperation between forest rangers, the tourism industry and the private sector to reduce demand for illegal wildlife meat.

Currently, nationwide each year, ecotourism activities in special-use forests, conservation areas, and national parks attract more than 2 million visitor arrivals with a revenue of more than VND100 billion. This field has a huge potential for tourism businesses to develop and build typical tour routes to promote development.
According to statistics from the Vietnam Tourism Association, there are currently 33 national parks, 57 nature reserves, 13 species and habitat conservation areas, 53 landscape protection areas and 9 biosphere reserves across the country. In Quang Nam alone, there is 1 biosphere reserve, 1 national park, and 2 species and habitat conservation areas.

According to a representative of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the potential to promote responsible tourism activities associated with nature conservation in Quang Nam are large because the province possesses a diverse system of tourism resources, yet for many reasons, tourism products in this field are staying limited. Therefore, the Department hopes that the business community will boldly commit to research and promote this type for the sustainable development of the tourism industry as well as the ecosystem.

In the framework of the workshop, under the witness of the management agency, 24 tourism businesses in the province signed a commitment to join hands to conserve wild animals to preserve the ecosystem, protect sustainable development and comply with the legal law and regulations related to wildlife.
