New Year tree-planting festival launched

Hanoi’s tree-planting festival was launched at its new urban area of Viet Hung in Long Bien precinct on January 30, 2009 the fifth day of the first month of the lunar Year of the Buffalo.
Addressing the launch ceremony, Pham Quang Nghi, Party Politburo member and Secretary of the Hanoi municipal Party Committee, recalled Uncle Ho’s call in Spring 1960 for a tree planting festival in every spring, which has become a fine tradition of the country.

In 2009, Hanoi aims to plant 160,000 shade-trees and fruit-trees in its 20 precincts and districts, including 45,000 trees in the outlying district of Dong Anh.

In addition, the city will have an additional 500 ha of concentrated forests in Ba Vi, Soc Son and My Duc districts, and take good care of 15,000 ha of forests with the aim of protecting the environment, covering bare hills and creating jobs for thousands of farmers.

The tree-planting festival was also launched in other provinces, including the northernmost province of Ha Giang and the central province of Quang Tri.
