Ba River is one of the largest river systems in Phu Yen province. Ba River is derived from Ngoc Ro mountain range (1,500 meters high) on Kontum Plateau, flowing through the three provinces of Kontum, Gia Lai and Phu Yen.
The river is called many different names through different localities in these provinces. The upstream flowing through the districts of Son Hoa, Song Hinh, Phu Hoa, Tay Hoa is named Ba river or Ea Ba, Krong Pa. The downstream from Dong Camto the sea in the south of Tuy Hoa city is named Da Rang River.
The catchment area in the upstream is 13.220km2. In Phu Yen territory, its catchment is only 2,420km2 in total area and 90km long. As flowing to Cheo Reo (Phu Bon), Ba River receives water from Ayun Pa tributaries; at the Phu Yen-Gia Lai boundary, it gets water from Krong Nang River (130km long), at Son Hoa district territory, getting water from Hinh river (85 km long, evolved from the Chu Mu mountain, Dak Lak) and Ca Lui river, Tha river. In the upstream, the river gets narrow, deep, with many waterfalls and rapids, especially in To Na pass (Cheo Reo territory), the river’s sides are steep and deep; but in Phu Yen territory, the river is larger for receiving water from other ones, the riverbed is flat; many great dunes as Phu Le, Ngoc Lang have emerged in the river’s heart, forming rich villages.
Ba river alluvial forms fertile plains with the area of over 20,000ha. Besides, two important hydropower works -Ayun Pa and Ba Ha River - are being operated on Ba river.
