S. Korea helps HCM city develop river tourism

Update: 25/04/2012
The Jeju tourism authority will support the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in developing the river tourism as well as exchange staff to enhance management experiences and promote tourism.

Nguyen Bao Anh from the department said that a delegation from Jeju has arrived in the city to study the river route from District 1 to Can Gio District. The Jeju tourism authority, which has a good relationship with the department, is experienced in developing ecotourism projects which are relating to river tourism, and thus the authority’s advices will be useful for the city’s tourism, he said.

“It is estimated that results of the study and the authority’s proposals will be sent to HCMC in June and serve as a base for the city to develop river tourism products in the coming time,” Anh said.

The department is currently also preparing a plan of exchanging staff with the Jeju tourism authority.

Developing river tourism is one of the HCMC’s key plans with Can Gio District as a focal point. The city has opened a short-distance river tour from Bach Dang Wharf in District 1 to Ham Long Artisan Village in District 2 and then the Bach Dang-Can Gio route. It has also considered opening other river routes from HCMC to neighboring provinces of Dong Nai and Binh Duong.

However, the most outstanding activity of the river tourism development program is to open the route from Phu My in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to Can Gio District with many marketing activities to welcome foreign tourists.

Together with the cooperation with the Jeju tourism authority in developing river tourism, the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has set up a plan to study a river route connecting the city with the Mekong Delta and Cambodia, and the survey trip will be made late this year.
