Rare bison found dead in Binh Phuoc

Update: 25/05/2012
Authorities in southern Binh Phuoc Province's Dong Phu District yesterday confirmed a gaur found dead on Sunday in a local forest was categorised as type 1B, considered a rare type.

The gaur (Bos gaurus), also called Indian bison, is a large bovine native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. The species has been listed as vulnerable since 1986 as the population declines.

The dead animal's carcass was destroyed according to the law on protecting wildlife.

Dong Phu district police said the nearly-100kg gaur was believed to have been trapped by illegal hunters.

Currently, there are about 20 gaurs living in the 2,500-ha forest. Police and local authorities have increased patrols to prevent illegal hunters.
