Greenhouses swell, threaten Da Lat environment

Update: 30/07/2012
The Central Highlands city of Da Lat has seen an increase in recent years in greenhouse areas totaling more than 4,000 ha, presenting a threat to the local environment, according to experts’ announcement at a meeting on July 27.

At the meeting “Applying high-tech to agriculture production in Da Lat,” Nguyen Van Bo, director of the Vietnam Institute of Agricultural Sciences informed that Da Lat is now the country’s leading locality in applying greenhouse and other technologies to agricultural production. The total area of greenhouses in the city has reached more than 4,000 ha.

However, the director also warned that the greenhouses are having a bad influence on the city’s environment, like increasing temperatures, decreasing nutrients in soil and polluting water.

For that reason, experts at the meeting recommended local farmers should use net houses, a kind of greenhouse but with nets in place of glass.

Greenhouses should only be used for plants whose natural growth is at odds with local habitat, they added.
