Energy efficiency in Sammy Hotel, Vung Tau

Update: 26/09/2011
Sammy Hotel (157 Thuy Van - Vung Tau City - Ba Ria-Vung Tau) was built by French architecture in 1993 and put into use in 1996. Located on Bai Sau beach, the hotel is very convenient for guests to rest, travel and go shopping.

Mr. Vo Tuan Thanh, Director of the Hotel, said: “Realizing the importance of saving electricity in terms of economy as well as environment, the Director board of the hotel has decided to invest in improving the air conditioning system, install power saving lighting devices and change the operation of all equipment in order to save costs in production and trading of the hotel.

Before applying energy saving solutions, each year, the hotel consumed over a million KWh of electricity, equivalent to nearly VND 2 billion. After renovating the lighting system, air-conditioning system and applying of some other power saving measures, electricity consumption of the hotel has been reduced to about 800,000 kWh, equivalent to VND 1.5 billion.

For ventilation and air conditioning system, to save power at startup and circulate the air outside, the hotel has installed 140 sucking fans for every room with the capacity of 45W. The temperature in all rooms of the hotel is set at 25oC - 27 oC.

Outdoor units of air conditioners are arranged at the locations of natural ventilation which avoid direct sunlight and ensure the beauty of the hotel. The arrangement of outdoor units has not only saved 5-10% of power consumption but also expanded the life of the whole system.

The hot water supply system for guests is a local system. The water temperature is always reasonably maintained at 70oC to reduce the amount of power consumed to heat the water. The hotel also examines steam using equipment periodically to prevent heat loss.

To save as much power as possible for the lighting system, the hotel has selected power saving devices like 5W, 9W compact lamps, or T5, T8 fluorescent bulbs. Depending on areas such as restaurants, lounge, or bedrooms, different devices are used to ensure the aesthetics while saving power. Accordingly, the hotel uses 5W, 9W compact bulbs in offices and passages, takes advantage of natural light in the lounge area and turns off advertising signs after 22 pm every day.

With 8 floors in use and a lot of tourists, the elevator system of the hotel has to operate almost constantly, especially in tourist season. The building is using 3 elevators; the capacity of each elevator is 8kW. To save energy for this system, the hotel has taken the initiative to install inverters for elevators to control motors and reduce consumption when not in use.

Specific calculations have shown that, with improvements in the air conditioning system and lighting system, in 2010, the hotel saved over 225 thousand kWh, reduced 96.7 thousand tons of CO2 emissions into the environment.

Talking about the next plan of the hotel in the implementation of energy saving, Mr. Thanh said “We are now considering the installation of solar water heaters to save electricity for the hotel. When 119 indirect 150L ARISTON water heaters in use are replaced by solar water heaters, power cost of the hotel will be reduced significantly. In addition, the hotel is also considering the replacement of the central air conditioner with another machine which has higher performance and energy efficiency”.
