The 40th annual Earth Day was celebrated on April 22. It has been 39 years since people regardless of skin-colour, religion, career... throughout the world marked the day to acknowledge the significance of our planet protection and environment conservation. The environmental activists are no more alone nowadays.
According to the Washington-based Environment News Service (ENS), the United States inaugurated a campaign namely the Green Generation encouraging the Americans to consume renewable energy (as solar, wind energy...), promoting green jobs (environment-friendly jobs) and green economy (environment-friendly economy). Environmental activists define green generation as those capable of caring for living environment not only surrounding them but to trans-boundary extent.
In the USA, where the idea of Earth Day derived, the anniversary was celebrated at 10 cities, up 2 cities over 2008. The activists would concentrate on projects deployed in parks, beaches, schools, forests..., and propose solutions to climate change restriction, such as planting trees, consuming energy-saving products, planting gardens in towns...
Since the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, environment acknowledgement has become the common trend of all economies and political institutions. Businesses have increasingly been aware of the importance of environment preservation, which helps them use energy economically, save more money, deeply impress customers who are willing to be responsible for the Earth and, therefore, foster their profits.
US Winconsin senator Gaylord Nelson was the catalyst of Earth Day whose idea was first launched in 1970. With over 20 million US attendants, it started a widespread movement for sustainable development.
By 2000, it was Internet linking activists all over the world. 5,000 groups of environmental activists from 184 countries and territories had organised responsive activities on the occasion of the Earth Day annually. Earth Day Network has connection with 17,000 organisations in 174 countries and territories. Earth Day is the only event being held at the same time globally.
