Eco-village model to adapt to climate change in the Mekong Delta to be built

On 31 Oct, in Hanoi, Vietnam Environment Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment held a scientific conference on designing community-based ecological village model to adapt to climate change Mekong Delta. The conference was chaired by Mr. Nguyen The Dong, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Environment Administration and relevant ministries and agencies.

Vietnam Government has issued the National Target Programme to respond to climate change. According to the climate change scenario, at the end of the 21st century sea level will rise 0.5 to 0.7 m, then two thirds of the Mekong Delta will be submerged in water. Therefore, the eco-village model to adapt to climate change in the Mekong Delta is one of the effective measures to deal with the situation in the present time

At the conference, Consultation and Technology Center has presented the criteria of eco-villages to adapt to climate change in the Mekong Delta. The set criteria for the construction of an eco-village include water supply, wastewater treatment, solid waste disposal, transportation, public lighting, energy and trees. The model of eco-village consists of 15-20 households and a common house which are built along the canal.

Speaking at the conference, Professor Tran Hieu Nhue expressed his suggestions for the set criteria’s eco-village. The eco-village should be built more natural and reflected history of the Mekong Delta. Besides, it needs to get more involvement of the community.
