Langbiang – the new Biosphere Reserve of the world

Representative of UNESCO in Viet Nam granted a certificate of recognition of Langbiang Biosphere Reserve as a world biosphere reserve in Da Lat city (Lam Dong Province).

 

Earlier in June 2015, in Paris (France), the 27th session of the International Coordinating Council for Man and Biosphere of UNESCO had recognized Langbiang to be the world Biosphere Reserve in Viet Nam (This is the 9th world biosphere reserve in Viet Nam and the first in the Central Highlands).

 

The Biophere Reserve has an area of over 275,000ha including a large area of primeval forests and the core region - Nui Ba Bidoup National Park (66,000ha). This is one of the endemic bird centers of the world and is one of four centers of biodiversity in Viet Nam (along with Hoang Lien Son mountainous area in the north, Ngoc Linh mountainous area in the Central, rainforest area in North Central).

 

The value of biodiversity conservation of Langbiang biosphere reserve shown in the presence of 1,945 plant species, including 96 endemic species; 153 species of fauna and flora in the Red Book of Viet Nam and 154 species of fauna and flora listed in the IUCN Red List (the book on the status of conservation and biodiversity of fauna and flora in the world). In particular, there is a number of rare species such as yellow-cheeked gibbon, black-shanked douc langur, Malayan bear, gayal, chamois...
