Sustainable development for Con Dao Island
Update: 19/06/2007
Every year, Con Dao Island's natural beauty and biodiversity, on land and under the sea, attracts increasing numbers of tourists. However, this also has a negative impact on the island's biodiversity.
Recently, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved the project "Socio-economic development in Con Dao district to 2020" (Decision Number 264/2005/QD-TTg). The project aims to help Con Dao to sustainably develop a modern tourism industry with a dynamic economy.
At workshop "Assess strategic environment in Con Dao district", Con Dao conservation experts recommended the need to reinforce the relationship between planning and environment conservation, with a special focus on tourism.
They aso raised concerns about an increase in industrial and business activities in Ben Dam habour creating marine pollution and damaging coral reef habitats and species.
And they recommended an important measure for sustainable marine development is minimising pollution. This is also considered a vital step in Con Dao's tourism development strategy following the government's approval of the general structure for Con Dao's future development.
