Of the latest discoveries, 20 caves were found in Lam Hoa commune of Tuyen Hoa district, as well as in Hoa Phu and Hoa Son communes of Minh Hoa district. In addition, the two remaining caves were found in the area of Phong Nha-Ke Bang.

Howard Limbert, head of BCRA cave experts, said that all of the newly detected caves are wet and small, adding the new cave system features many different entrances and exits.

“Several caves are connected with others, creating many horizontal passages that make the trip around the inside very interesting," the expert noted.

To make these locations safe tourism destinations, he said experts and local authorities would conduct a number of research activities on water flows, along with geomorphological and geological tests.

Earlier, during an expedition from March 12 to 16,  BCRA also discovered five new caverns in the limestone mountains in Quang Binh province.

With more than 500 caves discovered, the central province of Quang Binh is renowned as the country's kingdom of caves. There are over 40 caves in the locality which are open to tourists. Son Doong is the world's largest, while En and Pigmy caves come in at second and fourth.

Slots for the Son Dong expedition adventure tour are fully booked through to March, 2024.
