As part of the Ecoculture-funded project on growing trees in Da Nang, on Saturday, the Da Nang-based GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Centre (GreenViet) in collaboration with the Hoa Lien Commune People's Committee in Hoa Vang District organised a ceremony to launch the planting of 20,000 large trees.

At the launching ceremony, GreenViet handed over 20,000 large wood seedlings, including 15,000 Sua (scientifically known as Dalbergia tonkinensis Prain) and 5,000 Giang Huong trees (scientifically known as Pterocarpus macrocarpus), to residents in Hoa Lien Commune, aiming to green up over 18ha of production forest.
According to local farming families, in the past time, on the production forest land, many people often grow acacia trees. However, after harvesting, people have to burn forests, greatly affecting the topsoil. Therefore, the replacement of acacia trees by large native ones will not only improve the long-term economy but also contribute to environmental protection, minimising climate change, floods and landslides.

Through the project, locals will develop production forests and forestry economy by boosting eco-tourism in a sustainable way, planting medicinal plants under the forest canopy, and developing a model of forest gardens.
The project aims to effectively implement the municipal project ‘Growing 1 billion trees in the 2021 - 2025 period citywide’ with the aim of protecting the ecological environment, improving the landscape and respond to climate change, thereby contributing to promoting the local socio-economic development and enhancing the quality of life for local residents.
