Biogas programme helps save fuel costs
Update: 12/11/2008
A national programme on producing biogas as fuel from farm animals’ excrement has spread to 29 provinces and cities nationwide with 50,000 family-based systems built during the past six years.
The 50,000th biogas generating system was completed in central Nghe An province on November 6, 2008.
According to experts, with the 50,000 biogas systems, the country can save VND 100-120 billion in fuel costs and reduce carbon dioxide discharge by 225,000 tons each year.
In addition, the project has also provided a large volume of manure for organic farming and improved the hygiene and living standards for rural people, especially women and children.
In April 2007, the project won the prestigious Energy Globe Award, which is presented annually to works that greatly contribute to reducing the global warming.
