Hairy-nosed otter found in Ca Mau province

Update: 29/09/2008
Two hairy-nosed otters (scientifically known as Lutra sumatrana) have been discovered in the U Minh Ha National Park in the southernmost province of Ca Mau.

Researchers of the Cuc Phuong National Park’s pangolin and animal preservation programme said that this is the least known otter among the world’s 13 species and is thought to be extinct since 1990s.

Covering more than 8,000ha of forests, the U Minh Ha National Park is home to many species on the verge of extinction including hairy-nosed otter, oriental small-clawed otter species (Aonyx cinerea) and civet cat.
