Numerous effective plastic-free models in Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa)

Recently, Cam Ranh City Women's Association at all levels has implemented several effective plastic-free activities.

Several effective models

The "Women protect the environment" Club under Cam Linh Ward Women's Association was established in 2022 with 80 members in 9 residential groups. On the 3rd day of every month, club members go to trash black spots to run public awareness campaigns, propagating waste classification at source and proper disposal of waste. Besides, the members also give specific instructions to improve local people's awareness and actions regarding environmental protection.

According to Nguyen Thi Thu Thao, Chairwoman of the Ward Women's Association, Head of the Club, club members have also implemented other effective environmental protection models such as waste classification at source and "Clean house, clean environment". 100% of association branches have "Women protect the environment" groups.

In Cam Linh Ward, women's environmental protection groups have implemented several effective models such as “Reducing plastic waste” and "Turning trash into cash". The members collect used plastic bottles and other plastic things from households to sell and raise funds to buy and donate 100 shopping baskets to replace plastic bags; 10 trash cans and wastebaskets for household waste classification; give livelihood support and gifts to nearly 50 members, women and children in need. The club has collected more than 10 tons of waste. 10 women's groups have been involved in waste classification at source and 9 others in waste recycling and transformation into useful items.

In Cam Loc Ward, the model "using shopping baskets to limit the use of plastic bags" of the Ward Women's Association was established in 2019 with 165 members so far from 30 members initially. According to Nguyen Thi Minh Anh, Chairwoman of Cam Loc Ward Women's Union, members of the "Women self-managing and protecting the environment" model have proactively taken the initiative to erase 4 trash "black spots" in the area, periodically joined clean-up efforts the at May 19 Park and in the neighborhood; implemented the model "scrap collection", raising more than VND19.4 million to help women and children in need, contributing to protecting the environment and reducing plastic waste.

Contributing to environmental protection

To propagate plastic waste reduction and protect the environment, in early June 2024, Cam Thanh Nam Commune Women's Association coordinated with the Commune Farmers' Association to carry out a trash-for-plant exchange, collecting nearly 10kg of recyclable waste, including plastic bottles and 350 cans which were exchanged for  70 coconut trees.

In addition, the association at all levels in Cam Ranh has also focused on propagandizing plastic waste prevention and environmental protection through talk shows, seminars, clubs and other activities; organized training classes to raise public awareness about the Law on Environmental Protection; the risks and harmful effects of plastic waste on the living environment and human health; encourage waste classification at home and the use of sustainable alternatives to replace single-use items.

Recently, the association has organized 64 environmental cleanup operations with more than 13,600 officials and members involved. Under the plastic-free campaign, several creative activities and models have been implemented with used plastic bottles recycled into valuable things, including vases and other containers. Many clubs on plastic waste control, floral roads, etc.. have proved effective.

According to Trinh Thi Thu Huyen, Vice-Chairperson of Cam Ranh City Women's Union, the plastic-free campaign has been actively implemented by the Women’s Association at all levels with many effective models and practical activities, contributing to raising public awareness of recycling and eco-friendly living.
